- a goddess who expiated the blood shed in battle; to her were devoted the arms taken from an enemy, Liv. 8, 1; 45, 33; Varr. L. L. 8, § 36 Müll.; Gell. 13, 23, 1; Inscr. ap. Reinas. I. n. 238.
also called Lua mater or Lua Saturni, one of the early Italian divinities, whose worship was forgotten in later times. It may be that she was no other than Ops, the wife of Saturn; but all we know of her is, that sometimes the arms taken from a defeated enemy were dedicated to her, and burnt as a sacrifice, with a view to avert punishment or any other calamity. (Liv. 8.1, 45.33 ; Gellius, 13.22; Varro, de Ling. Lat. 8.36, with Müller's note.) [L.S]
also called Lua Mater or Lua Saturni. One of the early Italian divinities, to whom were dedicated the arms taken in battle (Gell.xiii.23.1).
