Gergis
GERGIS, GERGI´THUS, GERGI´THES (Γέργις, Γέργιθος, Γέργιθες : Eth. Γεργίθιος), a town in Troas, on the north of the river Scamnander, was inhabited, according to Herodotus (Hdt. 5.122, 7.43), by descendants of the ancient Teucrians. In the time of Xenophon (Xen. Hell. 3.1.15) Gergis is called a strong place; it had an acropolis and strong walls, and was one of the chief towns of the Dardanian princess Mania. (Comp. Plut. Phoc. 18; Liv. 38.39; Strab. 13. p. 589; Plin. Nat. 5.32; Steph. B. s. v.; Athen. 6. p. 256, 12. p. 524.) King Attalus of Pergamus transplanted the inhabitants of Gergis to a place near the sources of the Caicus, whence we afterwards find a place called Gergetha or Gergithion, near Larissa, in the territory of Cyme. (Strab. l. c. 616.) The old town of Gergis was believed by some to have been the birthplace of the Sibyl, whence coins found there have the image of the prophetess impressed upon them.
[L.S](Γέργις) or Gergītha (τὰ Γέργιθα). A city of Dardania in Troas, a settlement of the ancient Teucri, and, consequently, a town of very great antiquity (Herod.iv. 122). Gergis, according to Xenophon, was a place of much strength. It had a temple sacred to Apollo Gergithius, and was said to have given birth to the Sibyl, who is sometimes called Erythraea, from Erythrae, a small place on Mount Ida (Dion. Hal. i. 55), and at others Gergithia.
