Liburnia

(Λιβουρνία). A district of Illyricum, along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, separated from Istria by the river Arsia, and from Dalmatia by the river Titius. Its inhabitants, the Liburni, supported themselves chiefly by commerce and navigation. They were celebrated at a very early period as bold and skilful sailors. Their ships were remarkable for their swift sailing; and hence vessels built after the same model were called Liburnicae or Liburnae naves. It was to light vessels of this description that Augustus was mainly indebted for his victory over Antony's fleet at the battle of Actium. (See Actium.) The Liburnians were the first Illyrian people who submitted to the Romans. See Illyricum.
