- the Minyans, Argonauts, the companions of Jason, so called from their ancestor Minyas, a king in Thessaly: Minyae dicti Argonautae, quod plerique eorum ex filiis Minyae fuerant orti, Paul. ex Fest. p. 122 Müll.; Ov. M. 7, 1; cf. Hyg. Fab. 14.
(Μινύαι), an ancient race of heroes at Orchomenos, Iolcos, and other places. Their ancestral hero, Minyas, is said to have migrated from Thessaly into the northern parts of Boeotia, and there to have established the powerful race of the Minvans, with the capital of Orchomenos. As the greater part of the Argonauts were descended from the Minyans, they are themselves called Minyae; and the descendants of the Argonauts founded a colony in Lemnos, which was called Minyae. Thence they proceeded to Elis Triphylia, and to the island of Thera. (Hdt. 1.146, 4.145; Pind. MI´NYAE (Μινύαι), an ancient race in Greece, said to have been descended from Minyas, the son of Orchomenus, who originally dwelt in Thessaly, and afterwards migrated into Boeotia, and founded Orchomenus. [For details see ORCHOMENUS] Most of the Argonautic heroes were Minyae; and some of them having settled in the island of Lemnos, continued to be called Minyae. These Lemnian Minyae were driven out of the island by the Tyrrhenian Pelasgians, and took refuge in Lacedaemon, from whence some of them migrated to Thera, and others to Triphylia in Elis, where they founded the six Triphylian cities.
