Protestants

Protestants: *Prŏtestantes, ium (qui dicuntur): cf. Conf. Augustan. pref. extr., de quo hic etiam sollenniter et publice protestamur (the name was originally a cant term). But usu. better expr. by circuml.: as, *ii qui Romanae [Catholicae] ecclesiae (Pontificis Romani) auctoritatem negant, repudiant. (N.B.--By no means use protestans, sing., as subs., but expr. by circuml.)
