• year, τοῦδʼ αὐτοῦ λυκάβαντος ἐλεύσεται ἐνθάδʼ Ὀδυσσεύς within this very year, Od. 14.161, 19.306 (but ‘this very month’ acc. to D.Chr. 7.84; perh. day, if Od. 14.161-2 are spurious); εἶαρ . . ὅλῳ λ. παρείη Bion Fr. 15.15; αὖθι μένων λυκάβαντα for a year, A.R. 1.198; but acc. λυκάβαν IG 12(2).129 (Mytilene, late):—the word is freq. in metr. epitaphs, ib. 4.622 (Argos), Epigr.Gr. 231 (Chios), 228 (Ephesus): hence

Alex. 34 ; nach B.A. 1095 arkadisch für ἐνιαυτός, von den Alten schon verschieden erklärt : nach Eust. wunderlich von λύκος u. βαίνω, weil die Tage des Jahres so unmittelbar auf einander folgen, wie Wölfe, die, wenn sie über einen Fluß setzen, einer in den Schwanz des andern einbeißen ; richtiger von ΛΥΚΗ, die Lichtbahn, der Sonnenlauf, vgl. Macrob. Saturn. 4.17 ; Lobeck Phryn. 610.

λυκάβας

[λυκ-, light, as in λύχνος + βα-, βαίνω. The going of light.]

Thus, prob., the period of time in which daylight goes and comes again : τοῦδʼ αὐτοῦ λυκάβαντος (within a day’s space, ere the sun shall set again) Od. 19.306.

(This interpretation involves bracketing Od. 14.161-162 (=Od. 19.306-307); but is obviously superior to the interpretation a year.)
