1. Amāta, ae, f. (eig. die Geliebte), I) Gemahlin des Königs Latinus, Mutter der Lavinia, der ersten Dienerin der Vesta zu Lavinium, Verg. Aen. 7, 343. – II) übtr., Name jeder vestalischen Jungfrau, wenn sie von dem Pontifex maximus gewählt ward, Gell. 1, 12. § 14 u. 19 (vgl. Walde, Etymol. Wörterb.2 S. 31).

Amāta
The wife of King Latinus, and mother of Lavinia. She opposed the marriage of Lavinia to Aeneas, because she had already promised her to Turnus. When she heard that Turnus had fallen in battle, she hanged herself. (Verg. Aen. xii. 603). See Aeneas; Turnus.
