mutule
mutule
One of a series of sloping rectangular flat slabs found on the underside of a cornice between via, decorated with guttae.
Description: Traditionally, they adorn the underside of the cornice and are located immediately over the triglyphs. There is one mutule over each triglyph, and one over each metope. In earlier architecture, those mutules over the metopes were sometimes narrower than those over the triglyphs.
