prida

prida [MW prid] 1 pledge, security, gage, (also perh.) thing given or lent in exchange for pledge or security, (procedure of) pledging or securing. b (spec.) ‘prid’, method of transferring land, etc., in medieval Wales, where land passed into possession of a creditor as a gage or security for a sum of money lent, for a term of years renewable (potentially in perpetuum) unless the loan was repaid at the end of a specified term or renewal thereof (v. Bull. Board Celt. Stud. XXVII 263–77, where ‘prid’ is dist. from, while being seen as a potential prototype of, so-called ‘Welsh mortgage’ although in theory a loan transaction, a ‘prid’ contract could serve as a de facto sale of land in evasion of a social and legal system that discouraged alienation of landed property without the extended kindred group, and land held by ‘prid’ was inheritable and testamentarily transferable just like other land in an individual’s possession; (in quot. 1457 1g infra) the debtor remains in residence on his mortgaged property and pays to his creditor an annual fee that is not counted against the principal of the loan, becoming a rent-paying tenant of a property that he still technically owns). c (de, in, or sub ~a, also in phr. terra ad ~am or terrae ad ~as (cf. 2 infra), of land, held or possessed) by ‘prid’ or by means of a contract of ‘prid’. d (demittere ad ~am or sim., of debtor) to surrender possession of (land, etc.) under terms of a ‘prid’ contract, to mortgage. e (dare in ~a, of debtor, app.) to acknowledge a lien to the value of (a sum of money) upon a specified piece of property (w. super & acc.). f (solvere in ~a, of creditor) to advance (a sum of money) as loan secured by specified piece of property (w. super & acc.; in quot. creditor is advancing an additional sum of money against a property already taken possession of under a previous ‘prid’ contract). g (sum of money lent, loan under terms of a ‘prid’ contract). de tunc et pryt non participant cum rege mayr et kymellaur Leg.
