THANKFUL
By circumlocution; e.g. to feel thankful to one for anything gratiam (rarely gratias) habere alicui (χάριν ἔχειν or εἰδέναι τινί when the thing for which one feels thankful is either not expressed as Cic. De Orat. 1 24 extr. or it follows in a clause of its own with quod as Cic. in Catil. 1 5 11; or in a clause subjoined by a relative agreeing with the person which is put in the dative; as I feel most thankful to him for having etc. ego illi maximam gratiam habeo qui me ea poena multaverit Cic. Tusc. 1 42 100). To be thankful from the bottom of the heart gratiam habere quantam maximam animus capere potest: to feel thankful to anybody for having done anything is gratiam habere alicui qui ... fecerit etc.; but sometimes the indicative is used to add more weight to the cause as a fact of actual occurrence: habeo senectuti magnam gratiam quae mihi sermonis aviditatem auxit = for she has increased etc. (Vid: Pr. Intr. App. 17).
