μεῖον (A), ονος, neut. of μείων (q.v.).

μεῖον (B), ου, τό,

• lamb or sheep offered at the Athenian Apaturia by a father who was enrolling his son among his φράτερες, τοῦ μείου IG 2(2).1237.5; τὰ μεῖα ib. 60; παρέστησε μεῖον Is. Fr. 124: expld. by Sch. Ar. Ra. 810 (cf. Eratosth. and Apollod. ap. Harp.) as neut. of μείων, too light! from the cry of the φράτερες when the lamb was weighed; cf. μειαγωγέω.

μεῖον ², ου, τό, das Schaf, welches an dem dritten Tage des athenischen Festes der Apaturien, κουρεῶτις, der Vater, wenn er seinen Sohn in die Register der φράτορες eintragen ließ, als Opfer u. Ehrengeschenk darbrachte ; die VLL u. Schol. Ar. Ran. 798 erkl. es dah., daß es ein bestimmtes Gewicht haben mußte, von den φράτορες gewogen wurde, und daß dabei es ein herkömmlicher Spaß gewesen sei, μεῖον, μεῖον, zu keicht, zu leicht ! zu rufen ; also μεῖον = κούρειον, s. μειαγωγός, μειαγωγέω.
