ΙΙ never occurs in Od., and signf. I rarely in Il.

ἡγεμονεύω, ein ἡγεμών sein, vorangehen, auf einem Wege, mit der Nebenbeziehung, daß man Anderen dadurch den Weg zeigt u. sie auffordert, nachzufolgen, τινί, z.B. τοῖσιν δʼ ἡγεμόνευε – Νέστωρ – ἑὰ πρὸς δώματα Od. 3.386 ; 8.4, 421, 23.293 ; auch πρόσθʼ ἡγεμονεύειν, 22.400 ; ὁδόν, den Weg vorangehen, den Weg zeigen, Od. 6.261, 7.30, 10.501 ; αὐτὰρ ὁ τοῖσι γέρων ὁδὸν ἡγεμόνευεν 24.225 ; ähnlich ῥόον ὕδατι ἡγεμονεύειν, dem Wasser ein Bett, einen Ablauf zeigen, bereiten, Il. 21.258 ; vgl. Pind. ὁδὸν ἁγεμονεῦσαι ἐπίστανται, Ol. 6.25 ; ἁγεμονεῦσαι κωμάζοντι 9.3 ; bei Ar. Pax 1059 ist ἐγὼ δʼ ὁδὸν ἡγεμόνευον im Orak. eine Reminiscenz aus Homer ; sp.D., δαίμων ἕτερον πλόον ἡγεμονεύσει Ap.Rh. 2.421 ; ἐγὼ δέ τοι ἡγεμονεύσω αὖλιν ἐς ἡμετέρην Theocr. 25.60. – In der Il. tritt die Bdtg. »dem Heere vorangehen, es führen«, gebieten, befehlen, mehr hervor, Τρωσὶ μὲν ἡγεμόνευε – Ἕκτωρ, eigtl. den Troern zog voran, Il. 2.816, wie Hes. ὅππη μὴ κείνοις θεὸς ἡγεμονεύει Theog. 387 ; gewöhnlicher c. gen., wie die anderen Wörter, die ein Befehlen, Gebieten bedeuten, Λοκρῶν δʼ ἡγεμόνευεν Αἴας Il. 2.527 ; 552, 620 u. öfter ; στόλου Ap.Rh. 1.704. Auch Plat., πότερον σὺ βούλει ἡγεμονεύειν τῆς σκέψεως ἢ ἐγὼ ἡγῶμαι ; Prot. 351e ; καὶ ἄρχειν Phaed. 80a. Ggstz ἕπομαι, 94e ; ἡγεμονεύειν ἐν τῇ πόλει Rep. V.474c ; ἡγεμόνων ἡγεμονεύουσι Xen. Ages. 1.3. – Thuc. braucht auch das pass., ὑπό τινος, 3.61.

    To act as guide or pilot, show the way: θεός τις ἡγεμόνευεν Od. 9.142, Od. 10.141. Cf. Od. 17.194.

    With dat., to guide (a person), show (him) the way: δεῦρό οἱ ἡγεμόνευεν Od. 17.372. Cf. Od. 10.445.

    With cognate acc., to show (the way): ὁδὸν ἡγεμονεύσω Od. 6.261, Od. 7.30. Cf. Od. 10.501.

    To lead the way, act as leader, take the lead: Τηλέμαχος πρόσθʼ ἡγεμόνευεν Od. 22.400.

    With dat.: τοῖσιν ἡγεμόνευεν Od. 3.386, Od. 8.4 = 421, Od. 23.293.

    With dat. and cognate acc.: τοῖσιν ὁδὸν ἡγεμόνευεν Od. 24.225.

    Sim.: ὅτʼ ἀνὴρ ὀχετηγὸς ὕδατι ῥόον ἡγεμονεύῃ (guides the flow) Il. 21.258.
